FFR/Princeton BTGALA's Shawn Cowls is bringing us back to People for a special spring dinner! Our dinners have had a great turn out of folks of all ages. People serves wonderful pan-asian food. We will have an hour of passed appetizers and mingling over cocktails (cash bar), a reading / screening upstairs and then we'll have a buffet dinner with delicious food for all. We have the whole restaurant for this special event!

We're very excited to have author Joel Derfner (Harvard, NYU)! He will be reading from his new book "Lawfully Wedded Husband: How My Gay Marriage Will Save the American Family." Joel is a writer, composer, knitter, step aerobics instructor, and (former) go-go boy in New York City. He is the author of "Gay Haiku" and "Swish: My Quest to Become the Gayest Person Ever." He composed the score to "Blood Drive" (book and lyrics by Tony-Award winning bookwriter Rachel Sheinkin), which has been produced by the Bridewell Theater in London, and the score to "Terezin" (book by Peter Ullian, lyrics by Len Schiff), for the Village Theater in Seattle. He has written songs for shows by the 52nd Street Project, the Prospect Theater Company, and the Washington Shakespeare Company. He is an alumnus of the Graduate Musical Theater Writing Program at New York University, where he is now on the faculty as well as a Harvard alum.

We are also excited to have author Donna Minkowitz (Yale)! She will be reading from her memoir "Growing up Golem: How I Survived My Mother, Brooklyn and Some Really Bad Dates," which Hugo and Nebula Award winning author Terry Bisson called "rich and wild, dark and funny, fearless as her legendary journalism and as scary as a fairy tale." Minkowitz won a Lambda Literary Award for her first memoir, Ferocious Romance, about her experience covering the Christian right. A columnist on LGBT politics and culture for the Village Voice for eight years, Minkowitz has also written for the New York Times Book Review, Salon, The Advocate, and New York magazine. She once disguised herself as a sixteen-year-old right-wing evangelical boy to write about the Promise Keepers for Ms. According to director Kimberly Peirce, an article she wrote in the Village Voice was the inspiration for the movie Boys Don't Cry."

As a special treat, Elegance Bratton (Columbia) will be showing clips from "Pier Kids: The Life", a documentary he's been making over the past three years. The film follows Elegance over the course of three years as he filmed three gay and transgender youth of color who, after being kicked out of their home for their sexuality, have become, like Elegance once was, homeless on the same street the Gay Rights Movement began so long ago. The film will be released in early 2015. Before studying at Columbia, Elegance was a photographer and filmmaker for the United States Marine Corps documenting humanitarian aid work in Southeast Asia.
